Whether you’re renovating or building, you’ll want to choose the ideal bathroom sinks and countertops for your bathroom.

Many considerations and decisions go into perfecting a home renovation or new build, such as the style of cabinets you’ll choose, the color of paint, the types of flooring, and much more. Another big-ticket item in bathroom renos is the type of sink and countertops you’ll select.

Once you make your selection, this option will likely remain in your home for decades before being changed. You’ll need to consider the wide range of elements and factors that come into play in your home’s rooms and what best suits your specific aesthetic and needs.

This blog is the ultimate guide to help you explore ideal countertops for sinks, the best bathroom options, and more. Continue scrolling to learn more.

8 things to consider

There are many things to consider when selecting bathroom sinks and countertops. Let’s start with the sinks.

When choosing your bathroom sink, functionality and design matter. In today’s market, you’ll find countless options with modern styles, sleek designs, and unique shapes to meet everyone’s needs. Because there seem to be endless options, finding the right one could feel stressful and overwhelming.

We are here to assist you during the research process and help you determine which sinks will work best for your bathrooms. Follow these steps:

Think about the material

Bathroom sinks come in many different materials, including stainless steel, porcelain, stone, cast iron, copper, and more. Before you select any material, take some time to think realistically about how much you’ll use the sink, how often you will clean it, and how you’ll actually use it.

Porcelain sinks are prone to scuff marks and stains, but you can get them clean with a little elbow grease. If you like the industrial or modern look, consider stainless steel. Keep in mind that stainless steel surfaces require constant cleaning to look neat.

Consider an integrated sink that matches the sink and countertop materials for a beautiful, seamless look. While beautiful and unique, this style is more expensive due to the custom manufacturing and laborious installation process.

Undermount vs. drop-in options

You’ll need to decide whether you prefer a drop-in or undermount sink. What’s the difference? As the names suggest, drop-in sinks drop into the hole in the counter with a visible lip. An undermount sink attaches to the underside of your countertops, creating a smooth, seamless look.

Undermount sinks maximize essential countertop real estate because the sink lip rests below the counter, rather than on top. If a clean bathroom matters, an undermount option may be ideal. Lips and seams trap dirt, dust, and grime between the sink’s edge and the counter.

Drop-in sinks are typically more affordable, but you’ll pay extra for this option in the time and effort it takes to keep them clean. If you install the sink yourself (which we don’t recommend), this route is easier.

Keep your cabinets in mind

Total bathroom vanity remodels are exempt from this point. However, if you are not replacing your cabinets, it’s important to consider your cabinets when selecting your new sink.

If you are keeping your existing cabinets, make sure the sink you choose can support the weight and accommodate the depth of your new sink. For example, a granite vessel sink can easily weigh 20-50+ pounds, and your cupboards need to be able to handle that.

Choose the right size for the space

There are several things to consider when selecting the sink size for your bathroom. First, keep your budget at the forefront of your mind; bigger sinks often come with bigger price tags.

You’ll also want to consider how often and how you plan to use your sink. If you prefer more countertop space, you probably should not go any larger than the standard sink size. However, if you have the counter space to spare, you may want to opt for a larger size.

Scale is an essential part of design that you should consider. If your bathroom is smaller, a massive bowl or vessel sink could overwhelm the space, making the entire room feel unbalanced.

Double sinks

If you have the money and space, consider double sinks, especially for bathroom vanity remodels. If you’re redoing everything and there’s space, double sinks increase home value and improve bathroom functionality in shared bathrooms.

Now onto countertops. Here are three tips for choosing countertops for sinks:

Take note of your style and preferences

Before making any decisions, look around you for ideas and inspiration. Head to stores for examples, look online or in your favorite home and style magazines, and visit friends’ houses to see what you like. Notice the patterns in the stone and the edge profiles you’re drawn to.

For example, if you find yourself dog-earring every page with dark stones, butcher block counters might not be the answer (even if you like them). Your patterns will tell you a lot about what you want and which styles you might be happiest with.

An exciting thing to remember is that not all of your bathrooms need to be designed in the same style. Feel free to explore your options! The upstairs shared bathroom can feature a light and simple stone, your powder bathroom can be moody and dark, and the primary bathroom could be a mix of both. Nothing is off limits.

Keep your lifestyle and current situation in mind

These should be significant factors in choosing the materials for your bathroom counters. Do you have kids or pets? How much action do your bathrooms see? How full is your overall plate (read: do you have time to manage countertop care)?

The answers to these questions will help narrow down which countertops best suit you and your situation. For example, if you aren’t too busy in your daily life and overwhelmed with your schedule, a higher-maintenance countertop material for your bathroom (like marble) might be a great option! If you have children or enjoy entertaining, you might want something that resists stains, like quartz.

Don’t forget the budget

There’s no denying that the cost of a remodel involving bathroom sinks and countertops adds up. It’s essential to remember your budget before making decisions and determining which countertops for sinks you choose.

Finding a supplier who can deliver quality bathroom products without breaking the bank is ideal. And remember, luxury countertops like marble and granite are an investment that increases home value.

3 materials for your bathroom counters

There are many materials used for countertop surfaces in bathrooms. Some options are better than others. Here are three of our favorite options:

Quartz counters

Quartz is a common choice among homeowners. There are countless options for color and patterns, and they come in many shades, sizes, and shapes. Quartz is one of the strongest stones available — stronger than marble and granite — and, with adequate care, it does not scratch or chip. Quartz is a nonporous stone that doesn’t stain, making it an excellent choice for bathrooms.

Marble counters

Marble counters offer beauty, timelessness, and an organic look. This soft stone exudes elegance and promotes relaxation, making it perfect for a spa-like bathroom. However, due to its porous nature, marble requires constant upkeep.

Granite counters

Granite countertops are an attractive, desirable, and affordable upgrade that may increase the value of your property. These eye-catching counters are highly durable, which makes them incredibly popular. Granite countertops require regular maintenance to keep them shining and in their best condition.
